The article describes the educational significance of Pune city and some of the leading institutions based here. Pune is considered as an educational haven and attracts thousands of students each year not just from other states in India but even from other countries. The city historically has been the educational capital of Maharashtra, which till date has continued. Pune has some of the premier educational institutions in various fields that have contributed significantly to the intellectual strength of the nation. Educational Culture in Pune Pune has a long tradition of education and is home to some of the oldest institutions in the country. Many colleges are centuries old and have become synonymous with the identity of the city. It was during the British rule that Pune city India started receiving educational prominence. In 1851, the Deccan College was established by Mountstuart Elphinstone for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The Deccan College was under the control of the then Bombay Government and was based on the British educational system. The institution boasts of an illustrious list of alumni like Lokmanya Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar and Ramkrishna Bhandarkar. The Deccan College today is an eminent research institute for archeology and linguistics. In 1885, another key institute began in Pune. The Fergusson College was established by the Deccan Education Society (DES) as a part of the literary and anti-British movement in colonial India. The DES comprised of illustrious freedom fighters like Lokmanya Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahadev Namjoshi and Vishnushastri Chiplunkar. The Fergusson College began as a center to promote progressive studies in science and humanities along with national education. Today, Fergusson College ranks among the top colleges in India for undergraduate and postgraduate-studies in Science and Humanities. Another leading educational institute in Pune is the ILS Law College. First established in 1923, Law College is considered to be amongst the top four colleges that imparts legal education to aspiring lawyers. It boasts of some of the best legal experts, judges and advocates on the teacher's panel. Pune also emerged as a major hub for management institutes with the revolution spearheaded by Symbiosis Institute. Established in 1983, the institute is a globally acclaimed for management studies and offers numerous management courses at the post-graduate level. With time, there has been an addition of undergraduate and distance learning colleges under the Symbiosis umbrella. These are just a few of the premier educational institutions that have put Pune on the international map.
