MBA which originated in the USA has now become a global concept. The degree which is on par with certain other majors like Master of Arts or Master of Sciences allows for practical preparation for individuals in the field of business and management. This field has matured over the years and has specializations to offer such as MBA in IT, Finance, Human resources and Electronic commerce. Aspiring candidates can choose between on-campus courses or pursuing online MBA degrees or courses to suit their busy schedule or learning styles. There are currently numerous colleges or institutions offering online courses or online MBA degrees that maybe varied, including new accelerated programs that are shorter than the 2 year gold standard taught in the USA or even one year programs on offer. A quite noticeable but promising trend is that the MBA recruitment marketplace has put on a new kind of vibrancy or buoyancy after a period of lull. It will not be far from the truth to say that it is dynamic and cyclical with countries like India and China making their mark in the field of MBA recruiting. There is thus a growing international recognition of the degree with countries like India and China taking the plunge into offering an array of study options in this field catching up with the more mature USA and Western European markets. There is however an emerging gulf between top schools and also-rans which makes it difficult to make the right choice. Also there is a growing trend of pursuing the course or degree online where there is a need to exercise utmost caution or discretion when it comes to selecting the best B-school. It is preferable or downright necessary to check on the accreditation factor while going in for virtual credentials. Online MBA courses or degrees are tailor-made for busy executives or those aspiring for career enhancement. Distance learning format thus makes it possible to work it out around your own schedule and at your own pace. India is now a preferred destination when it comes to education. Statistically it is a fact that over 1,700 American students complete their higher education in India. India is also the leading place of origin of students studying in the US campuses. With every institute in India looking for global collaborations there are ongoing exchange programs between the respective faculties. Indian students form an integral part of US education especially full-time MBA program. Some universities have also created a special forum for students interested in Indian business and culture based on the strength of Indian applicant pool. Montana State University for instance has also held International weeks with India as the theme of interest. This is a growing trend with MBA education as many such universities are coming forward with the intention of collaborating in the field like having joint degree programs of sending students to India and vice versa for study internships. Distance learning in the field is gaining currency. A-list Schools such as MIT have started packaging up and selling courses to DL outfits or started offering courses themselves in the Distance Learning format. Gaining qualification through online courses or online degrees may not have the same prestige or cachet that the “real thing” carries but they provide a practical and tangible value to lifetime learners. It is also too early to say that this trend will jeopardize or cannibalize the market for “real” degrees and degrade their brand. On the other hand it can be safely predicted that Distance Learning is here to stay. DL keeps getting “more real” with time, concurrent to improvements in software technology allowing for more interactions and more opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate in the rapidly growing importance of the virtual world.
