Though colleges want students to have excellent grades and SAT scores, these are not the only criteria for students' selection at highly selective schools. Colleges, like students, have to work really hard to keep up their reputation and therefore choose the right students.

All colleges want talented, specific and unique students to attain their schools. But colleges probably won't come looking for you and hence it is up to you to find a niche for yourself.

You need to continuously upgrade yourself in many aspects. Remember that even when you join a school of your dream, no college acceptance letter provides you assurance of a good education, a good job, or a happy life for that matter.

Today, a large number of students are applying for highly selective colleges like never before; and most successful students are in the race for joining selective schools after completing their diplomas. This means that many highly-qualified students are rejected every year from their selective schools. The truth is that sometimes students with perfect SAT scores, valedictorians, and winners of famous private scholarships all can get rejected from the most selective schools.

Hence, you must prepare a game plan at first; then research colleges and their requirements thoroughly. Sometimes colleges want students who are very specific--- an oboe player for the orchestra, a star quarterback for the football team, a speaker of Korean to help improve the language department, or a student council star to take over campus government.

You must make use of your interviews to find out if your skill sets are required by a specific school. Your interview helps impress the admission officers and is the easiest way to find out about the kind of students each college requires. Come well prepared and never be afraid to ask frank and important questions about the student body. It will not put you into trouble. In fact, it will show your seriousness in finding the best match for you and will reflect positively on your application.
